MARSIL ANDJELOV AL-MAHAMID

REMEMBRANCE

21. February to 1. March 2020. Opening: 21. February, 20-24 hrs

Born in Yugoslavia from a Syrian father and a Serbian mother in 1983, Marsil Andjelov Al- Mahamid has experienced war and conflict first hand as a child. Perhaps because of the trauma of such an event, he is aware of the necessity to remind ourselves of the senselessness, and brutality of war.

Andjelov migrated to northern Norway, where he learned of the violent history of the region during the Nazi occupation in World War II, including the Beisfjord concentration camp, the burning of Finnmark and stories of Yugoslavian prisoners of war in Norway.

These are some of the themes that are explored in this exhibition at Small Projects, which will also include an embroidery workshop which Andjelov sees as an effective tool for storytelling. “Remembrance” is almost like a plea from the artist, to never forget.

This exhibition is supported by the Norsk Kulturrådet, Tromsø Kommune and the Kunstsentrene i Norge.
